Podean helps consumer brands sell through online marketplaces. The company dates its founding to 2019, when it emerged as an Amazon specialist bringing advertising, retail operations and marketplace strategy into one agency.[1][2][6]

By July 2026, it spanned more than 110 marketplaces and had dedicated businesses in retail media, ecommerce operations, software and social commerce. The expansion accelerated after private-equity firm Mountaingate Capital backed a combination with Commerce Canal in August 2025, followed by five further acquisition events.[2][1]

That history explains why Podean belongs in the creator economy as well as the retail-media market. Its LiveCraft division and the acquired Social Commerce Club connect brands with livestream hosts, affiliates and TikTok Shop creators, then link the resulting demand to marketplace operations and advertising. Podean is building around the idea that discovery, media and the transaction increasingly happen in the same commercial system.[7][1][20]

The original idea was bigger than Amazon advertising

Mark Power founded Podean after leading Interpublic Group's Amazon centre of excellence. He had also run IPG agencies Ansible and Reprise and earlier built a performance-marketing agency across the United Kingdom, United States and Australia. That background placed him between two worlds that were often handled separately: brand advertising and the operational work of selling products online.[3]

Amazon was making that separation increasingly impractical. Its advertising business could use shopping data and measure activity close to a purchase, but a successful campaign still depended on product availability, accurate listings, useful content, reviews and competitive retail pages. In an October 2019 interview, Power argued that media would fail if those foundations were weak. Podean's initial proposition was to coordinate the pieces instead of treating Amazon as another search-advertising channel.[6]

Travis Johnson joined later that year as a partner and global chief executive. Johnson had created Sellwin, Dentsu's Amazon consultancy, and had worked with Power at IPG. He told AdExchanger that holding-company agencies tended to divide Amazon work across search, retail, media and consulting teams with different incentives. Podean, then a 22-person independent company, could put those disciplines under one roof. The company sold strategy and consulting alongside media management and retail operations, giving both brands and other agencies a way to build broader Amazon programmes.[4][5]

The business was designed to travel early. Podean opened in Australia in October 2019, with Sydney becoming the first announced step in an international rollout. AdNews described four routes to market at the time: directly managing retail or advertising for brands, supplying expertise to agencies and clients, helping organisations build their own Amazon teams, and advising media companies on ecommerce products. Those models remain visible in the current group. Podean can run work for a brand, advise a client team or provide specialist capabilities inside a wider agency relationship.[3][20]

Social commerce grew out of the same operating model

Podean's first important extension beyond marketplace services came before its acquisition programme. In January 2021 it launched LiveCraft, a division for livestream production, creator partnerships and live commerce. The opening campaign connected e.l.f. Cosmetics with Australian Twitch creator Loserfruit. LiveCraft later expanded across TikTok Shop and other social platforms, placing creators inside the commercial workflow rather than treating influencer activity as a separate awareness channel.[7]

The logic matched Podean's Amazon work. A creator or livestream could generate attention and product demand, while the agency's marketplace teams handled listings, inventory, media and conversion. This made social commerce a natural adjacent business: it brought the source of discovery closer to the infrastructure that completed the sale.[7][20][1]

Podean continued broadening its services around this model. It formalised a consulting division in March 2025 for global expansion, profitability analysis, catalogue improvement and marketplace strategy. By August 2025, immediately before the Commerce Canal combination, Mountaingate described Podean as an approximately 180-person business operating across five continents, with services covering global strategy, retail operations, content, analytics, media and social commerce.[8][2]

Amazon Ads named Podean its 2023 Global Expansion Partner Award winner for work helping e.l.f. Cosmetics expand advertising in Canada and the United Kingdom. The campaign put Podean's original international proposition into practice across multiple Amazon markets.[9][10]

Mountaingate turned expansion into a buy-and-build strategy

The decisive change came in August 2025, when Mountaingate Capital made the first investment from its third fund and combined Podean with Commerce Canal. Commerce Canal was a New York marketplace operator founded by Ryan Craver in 2016. It contributed supply-chain, logistics, licensing and retail operations expertise, particularly in apparel, along with Purvey.AI, a software platform for marketplace reporting, forecasting, inventory and catalogue management.[2][11]

The combination gave Podean a broader operating base and a sponsor prepared to fund acquisitions. The two businesses said the group would begin with more than 200 people across 17 countries, supporting more than 200 brands and licensees. Johnson remained chief executive. Power focused on relationships, talent and clients, while Craver took responsibility for strategy and analytics; all three joined the board.[2][11]

Mountaingate had previously backed commerce agencies Tinuiti and Mars United Commerce, so it brought an existing map of the sector as well as capital. Johnson later described a division of labour in which the sponsor identified potential targets and led early financial work, while Podean's founders judged strategic fit, culture and the working relationship with acquired leaders. That arrangement allowed the company to search for specific missing capabilities rather than wait to build each one internally.[12]

The acquisition programme followed a clear progression. Commerce Canal broadened Podean from marketplace marketing into deeper retail operations. The next deals strengthened retail media, added international coverage, filled a Walmart gap, expanded the software layer and then brought a specialist TikTok Shop operation into the group.[11][13][15][16][18][1]

Ad Advance and Amerge deepened the part of Podean closest to its origins. Ad Advance brought a retail-media team working across Amazon, Walmart and newer commerce channels, along with its Streamline technology. Amerge, founded by former Amazon employees, extended the group in Europe and added further expertise in Amazon's demand-side advertising and streaming inventory. Retail Brew reported that the Amerge deal was financed with Mountaingate's backing and that Podean intended to use the acquisition to expand in European markets.[13][14][15]

Cartbloom added a different kind of specialism. Podean already served brands selling through Walmart, but the acquired team had built its business around Walmart's marketplace and advertising products. The transaction gave Podean dedicated capability in seller onboarding, catalogue and content operations, and Walmart Connect media.[16]

The fifth event focused on software. HypeLinks links social content to marketplace sales, while OptimizeAds.AI brings together data from Amazon Ads, its demand-side platform and Amazon Marketing Cloud. Founder Sarang Fegde became Podean's chief technology officer and joined its board, with responsibility for the wider product and engineering group.[17][18]

Social Commerce Club completed the sequence announced through July 2026. The Vancouver company managed TikTok Shop operations, creator-affiliate programmes, paid social and shoppable content for brands. It retained its name after joining Podean, and the acquisition added 70 specialists. The deal expanded a social-commerce business that Podean had started with LiveCraft five years earlier rather than introducing an unrelated service line.[1][19][7]

What Podean sells today

Podean's present offer can be understood as four connected businesses.[11][17][1][20]

Marketplace operations and consulting

Operate the retail system

Expansion strategy, product listings, catalogue and inventory work, retail operations, content, licensing and retailer relationships.[20][11]

Retail media

Plan and buy media

Planning, buying, optimisation and measurement across Amazon, Walmart and other retailer media networks.[20][13]

Social commerce

Turn creator attention into sales

TikTok Shop management, livestream production, creator recruitment, affiliate programmes and paid social.[7][1][20]

Technology and analytics

Connect and measure the work

Marketplace reporting, forecasting, media measurement, social attribution and workflow tools led by Purvey.AI.[11][17][21]

Consumer brands are the principal customers. A company can hire Podean to enter a new marketplace, improve how its products are presented, run advertising, manage retail operations or operate a social-commerce programme. The group can also represent brands to retailers and, in some arrangements, act as a licensee or reseller. This breadth allows Podean to work on the commercial system around a product rather than a single campaign.[20]

The business earns most visibly through agency and consulting work. Clients pay for strategy, operations, creative production, media management and specialist marketplace services. Purvey.AI adds a software-subscription model, while licensing and reselling arrangements can produce different economics when Podean takes a more direct role in selling products.[20][21]

Retail media is central because marketplaces combine advertising with transaction data. Podean's teams can use advertising signals alongside sales, inventory, pricing and catalogue information, then change both the media plan and the retail operation. Purvey.AI is intended to give the group a shared data layer, while acquired tools provide more specialised functions in retail-media optimisation and social attribution.[11][17][21]

Social commerce extends that system to creator-led discovery. A TikTok affiliate video or livestream can introduce a product, generate demand and complete a purchase without a consumer following a conventional advertising path. Podean's combination of creator recruitment, shop operations, media and marketplace services lets the agency work across that full journey. This is the clearest reason to view the company as part of the creator economy rather than only as an Amazon agency.[7][1][20]

Scale and market position

Podean's July 2026 Social Commerce Club announcement provides the most recent operating snapshot. The figures are company-reported and describe client activity, not Podean's own revenue.[1]

The snapshot shows the speed of the acquisition programme. The group had reported more than 200 people and more than 200 brands immediately after the Commerce Canal combination in August 2025. By July 2026, its reported workforce had more than doubled and its client count had risen above 500. Those totals include acquired companies and should be read as the scale of the combined platform.[2][1]

In the Commerce Canal announcement, a Centric Brands executive said Podean had worked across several company divisions since 2021. Amazon Ads documented Podean's award-winning expansion work for e.l.f. Cosmetics, then named Amerge its 2025 Performance Optimization award winner for a later e.l.f. campaign before Amerge joined Podean. The work shows how Podean and its acquired teams have served large-brand marketplace programmes, while the July totals remain Podean's own aggregate figures.[9][10][11][22][23]

Integration will determine the next phase

Podean has assembled the main capabilities required to operate a brand across marketplaces, retail media and social commerce. Its next job is to make those teams useful as one group. That means connecting data and software, coordinating client work across countries and platforms, and preserving the specialist knowledge that made the acquired businesses valuable.[1][17][12]

Johnson has spoken openly about the organisational work involved. In a May 2026 interview, he described acquired businesses arriving with different job titles, compensation systems, tools and working practices. Podean had sometimes adopted an acquired company's methods instead of replacing them. He also said culture and leadership fit had moved to the beginning of the acquisition process after an earlier prospective deal failed late in negotiations.[12]

The approach helps explain why several acquired names and founders remain visible. Specialist relationships matter in this market: Amazon, Walmart and TikTok Shop each have their own products, partner systems and operating cultures. Keeping those teams intact can protect expertise and client continuity. The wider value of the group, however, depends on whether a client can use that expertise across Podean rather than buying from a collection of adjacent agencies.[12]

Technology is one route to that integration. Purvey.AI came with Commerce Canal as a marketplace data platform. Ad Advance, Amerge, HypeLinks, OptimizeAds.AI and Social Commerce Club added further media, analytics and attribution tools. Podean appointed Fegde to lead the combined technology organisation in June 2026 and described unifying the products as a priority. The newest additions were still being integrated when announced, so this remains an operating programme rather than a completed product story.[11][13][15][17][18][1]

Podean's development has been unusually fast: an initial period of mostly organic expansion followed by a concentrated year of sponsor-backed acquisitions. The company that started by joining up Amazon advertising and retail operations now applies the same idea to a larger landscape that includes Walmart, TikTok Shop, creator affiliates and retailer media networks. If the group can connect its acquired teams through common data, client relationships and operating systems, Podean will have turned an Amazon specialism into an integrated commerce-services group.[6][2][1][17]
