Naver Pays Creators Up to $6,700 a Month When Its AI Search Cites Them. Most Get About $200.

South Korea's biggest portal picks about 3,000 bloggers, forum hosts and, since 1 November, short-video makers each month by how often its AI Briefing quotes them. A flat ₩300,000 goes to nearly all of them; 110 people split the big grants.

Western AI companies are still arguing about how to pay the people whose work their answers are built on. Naver, South Korea's dominant search portal, has been paying individual creators for it since June, and on Thursday it collected a government award for doing so.

The program is Naver Mate. At the 2026 Asia AI Awards in Seoul on 5 November, Naver won the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Award for it, The Asia Business Daily reported. Here is how the money actually moves.

How you get picked

There's no application. Each month Naver names about 3,000 creators from its Blog, Cafe (forum), Knowledge iN (Q&A) and Premium Content services. Selection is "centered on AI Briefing citation counts," per Naver's official notice, then weighed against topic expertise, activity, content reliability, user response and search use. AI Briefing is Naver's generative summary at the top of search results, used by 30 million people a month as of May, according to News1.

Selection lasts one month, though creators can be picked in consecutive months. Anyone who counts as a public official under Korea's anti-graft law, which includes journalists and teachers, gets the badge but no cash.

What it pays

Every pick gets a ₩300,000 monthly "activity grant", about $200 at the rate Herald Business used. On top of that, each month Naver chooses 100 creators across 10 fields for ₩3 million each and one top creator per field, 10 in all, for ₩10 million (about $6,700). The notice says Naver can skip those awards if no channel meets the bar. Naver has put the yearly budget at about ₩20 billion.

By Posthype's arithmetic, a full month costs at most about ₩1.3 billion. Roughly ₩900 million of that, about 69%, is the flat ₩300,000 spread across nearly 3,000 people. The 110 special grants take the other ₩400 million.

Creators also get a badge on their profile and posts showing their citation count, and get listed as topic experts in search. Naver frames that as a route to followers, paid subscriptions and cafe sign-ups.

Video is in now

From 1 November, Naver's short-form Clip creators are eligible too, Electronic Times (etnews) reported on 27 October. Naver has been surfacing Clips in AI Briefing since June, with AI summarizing what's said in the video. That's the citation data the new picks rely on.

Naver Mate is a beta from June to December. Etnews reports a full launch next year with a bigger pool. Naver has said AI Tab, its chat-style search, will count toward citations too. The program sits inside a ₩1 trillion, five-year content push that chief data and content officer Kim Gwanghyun announced in May.

Why it matters outside Korea

The US approaches look different. Marketing Brew's Jasmine Sheena reported on Thursday on Tollbit, which lets publishers set per-crawl rates, and on Parallel Web Systems' Index, which pays launch partners like Fortune by a value calculation. Every CEO Dan Shipper told her per-citation payments could come to "pennies or tenths of pennies."

Naver skips per-citation pricing. Citations decide who makes the list, and then a fixed fee goes to each person on it. For most picks that's about $200 a month, which isn't a living but does show up every month. The beta notice says amounts, criteria and eligible services "may be changed or terminated," so check the 2027 terms before counting on it.
