YouTube Gives Partner Creators Custom Shorts Thumbnails
Eligible Shorts creators can upload a separate image instead of relying on a frame from the video, while desktop now offers three suggested frames.
YouTube is rolling out custom thumbnail uploads for Shorts to creators in the YouTube Partner Program, giving eligible channels the option to use a separate image for a Short. YouTube announced the change on July 24, and CEO Neal Mohan described it as a rollout to all partner creators. The company’s longer announcement says it will expand access to more creators over time, so the first group is YPP channels rather than every YouTube account.
The image upload is the new part. Shorts creators could already choose a frame from their video in the YouTube mobile app. YouTube’s existing Help page says that selected frame can appear in search results, hashtag and audio pages, and on a channel page. The same page still says creators cannot upload a custom image for Shorts, which conflicts with the July 24 announcement and appears not to have caught up with the rollout.
YouTube is also adding a narrower desktop option for creators who do not upload an image. Studio can now suggest three frames from a Short, matching the selection offered for long-form videos. Mobile retains the more flexible frame picker, which lets creators choose any point from the Short. YouTube has not said whether uploading a separate custom image will be available on both desktop and mobile.
A second update brings thumbnail generation into Ask Studio, YouTube’s conversational AI tool, for long-form videos. Creators can ask it to make a thumbnail for a video, then request changes to elements including colors, layouts and text. YouTube’s announcement does not extend that generator to Shorts.
Ask Studio also has its own access limits. YouTube says the web-only tool is available to most creators globally, but excludes official artist channels, Made for Kids channels and creators under 18. Its Help page now documents the thumbnail-generation steps, including selecting a specific video inside a prompt.
YouTube has not published a completion date for the Shorts thumbnail rollout, a date for access outside YPP or Shorts-specific upload limits. Its general thumbnail rules include daily upload caps that vary by country, region and channel history, but the Help page has not yet explained how those rules apply to the new Shorts option.
