YouTube Counts a View From the First Frame From August 24

Public counters move to the moment playback begins. Partner Program pay stays on engaged Shorts views and engaged watch hours.

YouTube said on August 17 that beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across Shorts, long-form videos (VOD), and live streams. This is not a payout change, and it is not a change to who qualifies for the YouTube Partner Program.

Natasha of TeamYouTube, in a community announcement that day, said a view will register "from the very first frame," globally, on every format. From the 24th, she wrote, the new metric will appear "wherever views are shown on YouTube," and creators will "likely see their total view counts increase faster moving forward."

YouTube's Help Center uses the same start-of-play rule and the same ringfence. Earnings, it said, will still be based on "engaged Shorts views" and "engaged watch hours." Eligibility will still be based on "qualified Shorts views" and "qualified watch hours." Natasha added that those eligibility names replace what YouTube previously called "valid public Shorts views" and "valid public watch hours."

That public-counter rewrite is separate from the Partner Program Shorts-pay floor YouTube set for February 2027, which still runs on qualified views, not the number under a video.

TeamYouTube said it will keep the original view metric, now called "Engaged views," in YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode, "so creators can see how many viewers choose to continue watching their video." The same Help article's glossary defines engaged views as stays "past the initial seconds," then says the metric "only applies to Shorts" and, for videos and live streams, "it's the same as views." Neither page reconciles those two sentences.

Help also says the methodology for counting ad views across all content ("YouTube public views," in advertiser language) "has also been updated," without stating the new test. The same page still says skippable ads longer than 10 seconds count at 30 seconds or until they finish, and that non-skippable ads never qualify as views in YouTube Analytics. Natasha's post does not mention ads.

YouTube did not publish how large the increase will be, or what duration test long-form and live used before August 24. It is generally accepted, and not a published YouTube rule, that a standard upload needed about 30 seconds. Official docs also do not say whether existing public totals will be rewritten.
